Best Time to Visit the U.S.

It depends on where you’re going and what kind of trip you’re planning. Fall is a favorite for many because of the foliage and cooler temps — especially in the Midwest and Northeast.

Summer is great for city trips, road trips, and festivals, while winter is perfect for cozy escapes or holiday travel. Because the U.S. is so big and has different levels of temperature and climate all year round, I’d suggest visiting based on the specific state you want to visit and looking at the weather there, as well as any specific holidays or experiences you’d like to see.

What are the best cities to visit in the U.S. for a weekend trip?

Chicago, Seattle, and St. Louis are some of my top picks. They each have a strong local culture, walkable neighborhoods, and great food scenes — perfect for short getaways!

However, if you’re in the Midwest, I also recommend places like Door County in Wisconsin, located on the state’s peninsula, which features a series of charming little towns with stunning natural views, great food, and a deeply rooted Scandinavian culture mixed with American traditions.

How do people get around in the U.S.?

In bigger cities like Chicago, you can rely on public transit and ride-shares.

However, if you plan to explore smaller towns or take a fall road trip, renting a car is usually your best option. A good old-fashioned American road trip is one of my favorite ways to travel through the U.S., as it really is the best way to not only get around, but also see more at your own pace.

You can also travel nationally by train on Amtrak, which offers routes throughout the country, as well as, of course, flying.

Tipping in the U.S.

Yes, tipping is expected in many situations across the U.S. In restaurants, it’s standard to tip 15–20% of the total bill before tax.

It’s also customary to tip hotel staff, rideshare drivers, and tour guides. It’s a big part of service workers’ income, so even small tips go a long way.
