Canada is one of my favorite places to explore, not just because it’s close to home, but because it’s beautiful, culturally and historically rich, and naturally diverse.

I’ve visited cities like Montréal and Québec City more than once, and every time I go back, I find something new to love, whether it’s the European beauty of Old Québec City or the food scene in Montréal, plus more! Other amazing Canadian cities I’ve been fortunate enough to explore include Ottawa (Canada’s capital city), Toronto, and Vancouver, which offer diverse cultures and the stunning natural beauty of this great country.

If you’re dreaming of a trip to Canada, you’re in the right place!

Best Time to Visit Canada

Canada is huge, so the “best time” depends on where you’re headed and what you want to do. But here’s a quick seasonal breakdown to help you figure out what works best for your travel goals.

Spring (March-May): A great time to visit cities like Québec City and Montréal before the summer crowds. Still a bit chilly, especially Québec City, but fewer tourists and plenty of space to explore the streets, sometimes by with little people around.

Summer (June-August): Peak season across Canada to travel, and it’s definitely busy, from Montréal to Vancouver. It does make for great weather to explore Canada’s bustling cities whether on a walking tour or a bike tour, and of course, great patio weather.

Fall (September-November): Fall colors are decorating Canada’s provinces, which is a sight to experience.

Winter (December-Feburary): Magical in Québec and Montréal with scenes of snow-covered streets, Christmas markets, and twinkling lights.

How To Get Around in Canada

Getting around in Canada is easier than it seems, especially in the major cities and between them. Cities like Montréal and Québec City and Toronto are extremely walkable, especially in the historic districts. That being said, be sure to bring comfortable shoes to walk all day through cobblestone streets and some uphill streets.

VIA Rail Canada is the major train system in the country that connects cities from Montréal to Vancouver. It’s scenic, comfortable and easy to book in advance. This was how I traveled on my first visit to Canada, so personally, I can’t recommend taking the train from Québec City to Montréal enough if you’re traveling without a car. It’s super easy!

Public transport is pretty great for North American cities, especially in cities like Montréal. I use Google Maps or City Mapper to plan my route if I’m looking for the best public transport options to get around.

Yes, Uber is always an option in Canada, as are taxis, but I don’t necessarily recommend them unless you need to because they tend to be more expensive and sometimes take way longer than public transport, especially in cities like Toronto.

Money, Currency, and Tipping

Canada uses CAD (Canadian dollars), and cards are widely accepted. However, I recommend carrying some cash in case you join a walking tour or any other tour and would like to tip your guides.

Speaking of tipping, just like the US, tipping is mostly expected at restaurants, cafes, or any other kind of service, of course, and the amount is of course, up to your discretion. However, many people recommend tipping anywhere between 15%-20% for restaurants and 10% for taxis, shuttle services, etc.

Safety Tips for Traveling in Canada

Canada is one of the safest countries to explore, whether with friends, family, or solo. In my experience traveling here, I’ve never felt unsafe walking around cities like Québec City or Montréal. However, as always, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid walking in sketchy-looking alleyways or dark streets, especially if you’re traveling solo. Trust your gut, and be sure to follow the best solo female safety tips while traveling through Canada for a safe and pleasant experience.

Language Tips

English and French are the official languages in Canada, with French being mostly spoken in the Québec province only. If you don’t speak French and you’re visiting the Québec region (Québec City and Montréal) you’ll be fine with only speaking English, as they also speak English there as well.

Still, it’s nice to know a few words in French, especially if you’d like to wander to different cities or towns within French Canada.
