The Travel Mindset Explained

Now that I know how to tap into my travel mindset, I feel a sense of power, ownership, and control over the ability to tap into the feeling of excitement of the emotion of what traveling feels like to me wherever I go, which makes life a bit more fun!

In this post, I’ll share with you how travel is a state of mind, and how you can also tap into it more yourself for increased happiness and freedom, anywhere and anytime.

Let’s get into it!

What is “The Travel Mindset” exactly?

plaza de españa, salamanca, spain

A travel mindset is a feeling and overall lifestyle that can grant you the possibility to continue that spark for life, if you will, that we often feel when we travel.

The endless wonder, the curiosity, the sense of possibility that you can choose what makes you happy one and a thousand times over what doesn’t.

It’s being able to tap into the self-discovery moments (like we do when we travel) within the everyday moments, even in the most mundane of activities.

How you may ask? Let’s keep going with this thought.

One of the biggest travel myths

Other than “I don’t have money to travel” there is this unwritten rule that says that once we return back from our travels, we have to “snap back” into reality.

Whatever that is.

As if traveling the world wasn’t reality, to begin with.

Can you relate?

As if what we learned, experienced, and felt while we were learning about the world, and ourselves in the process, was something that we should snap out of once we reach home.

And by home, I mean literally but also returning to the old you. The pre-travel you.

My overall intention and objective here is that I think that there needs to be more conversation and openness when it comes to how to continue living in the lessons learned, broadened experiences, and not just on a level that conforms with our home society, but one that feels right on the inside.

But really, I’m sure you’ve experienced this feeling of..

Coming back home and feeling like you’re almost living two lives.

The one you “should” come back to, and the one with your new travel truths discovered, with that desire to continue living a life where you feel full of possibility and excitement and freedom just to be.

Being in this liminal space of feeling these two conflicting emotions is not exactly a great place to be, as you’re going through this duality, plus disorientation, jet-lag, confusion, FOMO, and all those feelings.

But we’ve all felt it at some point or another.

I mean, the point of travel is to allow it to expand our minds and open our eyes to a world of possibilities, right?

So why feel this feeling that we have to “get back to the real world” and do something that is socially expected out of us, even if it’s not what resonates with us anymore?

Why not instead of doing that, we learn how to “unpack” and reconvene these two versions of ourselves, along with the valuable experiences and lessons learned while traveling?

We can learn about how to implement this lifestyle and travel mindset into our everyday life to further that feeling of excitement and all of the above.

And I’m going to show you how.

So, how can the Travel Mindset help you?

Travel and everything else that comes with it is a state of mind if you think about it.

First of all, you have to own the fact that after traveling and experiencing what you have thus far, you are a lifelong learner and now someone who thrives in changing conditions, and someone who can see the beauty of life, even in the most “average” situations.

It all truly starts from within. So start there.

Whether you just came back from a trip, or you’ve been back but you’re feeling all sorts of emotions that make you miss your travels, and above all, that feeling of knowing that there was so much possibility, happiness, and freedom, this is the kind of mindset that will allow you to tap the travel mindset.

In my opinion, all of those feelings described above do not have to be exclusive to the moments that you are physically traveling.

They can totally and completely be experienced at home.

A few practical ways you can tap into that travel mindset

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of the ways in which you can ACTUALLY tap into the travel mindset, I must mention to you that before you get into the practical tips, it’s important to like I said before, start from within.

What does that mean?

You have to actually understand why and how you can start cultivating the travel mindset.

If I give you these tips right now, you might do them, but they won’t do as much as they can for you unless you understand a few key things behind the travel mindset.

So, in order to help you with this, I created this FREE PDF guide to help you gain that insight before actually jumping into the practical tips. In addition, I add a couple of other tips inside that I don’t mention in this post for added support and clarity around this topic.

How to tap into The Travel Mindset

Here are a couple of my favorite practical ways in which I like to tap into the travel mindset whenever I feel that I am missing the feeling of excitement, wonder, or simply just wanting to travel but for whatever reason, I cannot at the moment.

  • Find your local international shops: go through the aisles, look at the ingredients used and purchased, and also people-watch while you’re there.
  • Recreate recipes at home: Since being back from my travels, I’ve recreated a little of what I’ve had on my travels. Everything from making tortilla de patata and patatas bravas from Spain, to *attempting* to make Turkish coffee and also trying my hand at making Greek gyros and my own homemade tzatziki sauce. I’ve tried a lot and pretended I was sitting on a sunny terrace, enjoying the food of the country I decided to cook that day ? it might sound a bit funny, but y’all. Try taking a bite and closing your eyes and visualize you’re in that country, and you’ll know what I mean.
  • Continue the habits that you had while traveling: I still hang dry the majority of my clothes like I did in Spain, and I start the majority of my days with Barry’s Tea that I tried in Ireland. It’s these small habits that make me feel that I am truly living the way I used to, and by doing this, I am truly living in the travel mindset.

Don’t forget that before jumping into these practical tips, to understand the reasoning that goes before getting into the travel mindset.

The biggest reason why is because by understanding the foundation behind it (AKA the process and questions to ask yourself when establishing the travel mindset) If you understand the process and the contents of that page, you will be able to mold this process and attainment to your own version of the travel mindset.

Concluding thoughts on The Travel Mindset

Be prepared to see how this changes things for you.

Travel is the gift that keeps on giving.

The bottom line here is that when you travel, you know what you want and don’t want.

You abandon what doesn’t serve you, makes you feel good, etc. and you adopt what does.

Live it and leave the rest behind.

Living in the Travel Mindset has truly allowed me to continue living my best life.

Not only has it meant drinking Irish tea in the mornings and emulating that feeling of waking up in Dublin (which does give me joy), but it has also given me the courage to truly take my own advice and abandon what doesn’t serve me, in all areas of my life.

Essentially you begin living life by your own rules, by taking inspiration from your travels and how you felt as you explored and wandered independently.

When you’re happy and you start doing the things that make you happy, things get a little clearer as far as deciding to keep certain mindsets and create/abandon certain habits to help enable the best for you.

I can attest to the fact that I now live my life this way, and what it’s meant for me has been living my dream life, in person and in physical reality.

To more travel (and life) moments like these ✨
